What happens to those alternative school kids?
An audio episode of honest questions and the science behind the alt schooling system
Homeschooling / Unschooling / Private schooling disguised as co-op schooling / alt schooling / no schooling
Let’s be honest, there’s a lot of choices in how you educate your child nowadays. So, what happens to those kids whose parents choose the alternative education route? I recently saw these statistics and was gobsmacked… check this out.
“If you take the five most important brands in the world you’d have Google, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft and Apple. 4 out of 5 of those founders went to a Montessori School. The one who didn’t sent his kids to a Montessori School, Steve Jobs.
But zoom in on the fact that Montessori makes up just .000000002% of the available education in the United States. But it’s producing 80% of our most outstanding successes. If every child went to a Montessori School we would live in a different world.” - Kasim Aslam
*** Not to say these brands are all creating things in ethical, upstanding ways… but you can’t argue with the fact they have captured the mindshare and habits of our entire collective.
Maybe you’re like me and have always felt the pull to explore alternative education systems and school day options for your child. But, don’t feel called to ‘homeschool’ or un-school entirely.
Today, I’m honored to share a conversation about schooling that I had with one of my dear friends, Jeanne Poché of Ten Acre Woods, who has just launched her coveted Spring/Summer Craft Guide.
Prior to becoming a mother, entrepreneur and teacher, Jeanne worked in Public Relations and wardrobe styling in Los Angeles; before “wiping the slate clean,” as she calls it. She returned to school to get her Masters Degree in Integral Health with a focus on consciousness and creativity, as well as a certification in Waldorf Education.
In the short time I’ve known her she’s shown me how to dissolve away society’s idea of a “proper way” to educate. She’s influenced my greater imagination around school days. And challenged me to see it as a whole lifestyle decision for our family, rather than just an education system for my child.
In this audio episode I ask questions and we discuss:
The science behind delayed formal education to develop the child’s ability to hold a new thought and problem solve.
What would you do with a $14,500 school budget if you could put it back into your family instead?
How to bring our children with us as our cultures evolve rapidly.
The need to re-adjust school day options as the child outgrows the mother.
Not having to be everything for your kids.
Her Summer seasonal guide as a 12-week experiment with your child.
And so much more…
The Spring / Summer Craft Guide by Ten Acre Woods
This 12-craft guide is a step-by-step directional for crafting and creating with your children inspired by Jeanne’s cult favorite seasonal children’s camps hosted on their property in Tennessee.
It is also meant to serve as a framework, to offer inspiration and whimsy for how you’d like to spend your warmer days. Inside you’ll find a list of supplies, along with links to any you may not have on-hand. Most crafts in the guide are quite simple and require only common household materials or those that can be found in nature. A few require a bit more effort and supplies.
Jeana pens a love note to the late Eleanor Coppola and asks,“Why am I so unhappy?” Amy declares the future is offline… or maybe just this summer.
